We were delighted to invite to Cambridge Dr David Leigh-Lancaster, the Maths Manager for Curriculum at the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) in Australia to share his insights into the Digital Curriculum and Computer Based Maths. David's extensive work has encompassed advising on maths education policy; the use of technology; professional learning, teaching and learning resource development; as well as curriculum and assessment design, development, implementation, evaluation and review.
The workshop was attended by members of the ever growing Cambridge Mathematics Education Community, which included representatives from the MEI (Mathematics Education Institute) the Wolfram project and colleagues from all of the Cambridge Mathematics Partners. Our manifesto is based on an identified need in UK education for a mathematics curriculum framework fully integrated with teaching and learning resources, assessment and professional development. Our work also aims to identify similar needs across the world, which is how Lynne McClure, Director of Cambridge Mathematics, first met David.
It goes without saying you cannot fill a room with mathematicians and not do some maths, so the day started with a mathematical origami problem (also featured on the NRICH resources pages) from Lynne's recent study visit to schools in Japan.
The seminar was a rich source of learning and sharing, with many delegates staying on after the programme had finished to debate ideas and pose questions to each other. While digital may only currently be a small feature of the final Framework it has huge connotations for future teaching, learning and assessment.
